WELCOME TO SHARING THE WORD OF GOD WITH US

THE ORDER OF CARMELITES TANZANIA (O.CARM)

Corporate Gift

The gift of the organization is "to live a life of obedience to Jesus Christ". This gift is made up of three main elements. The elements are life of reflection, Fraternal life and Service life.

The Heart of the Gift Of Carmel

The heart of the gift of carmel is Prayer and Meditation. The word «gift» is a translation of the Greek word - "karisma - χἀρισμα "» which in turn is derived from the name « χἀ ρι ς <; - "Karis"» that is, «grace». Where karama means «divine gift» which is an example of God's grace bestowed on man. Grace is always a gift from God, not a natural gift even if there is no natural gift that is not a gift from God. But here we are talking about special grace. Apostle Paul often used the word gift in his letters. He uses the word gift as gift or ability. For example, he writes to Timothy telling him this: "Do not stop using the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy and by the laying on of the hands of the elders" (Tim 4:14), and he continues to tell him, "For this reason I remind you, stir up the gift of God, which in you by the laying on of my hands" (2Tim 1:6).

What the Apostle Paul says is that: living in moderation, the ability to lead believers and teach them godly values, is generally a gift (gift) from God himself. But the gift is given the power of authority to fulfill its duty by the laying on of hands by the elders and Paul. Likewise, the Apostle Paul tells the Christians of Rome: "For I long to see you, that I may give you spiritual gifts, so that you may be strengthened" (Romans 1:11). If you continue to read the same Epistle to the Romans, you will find the Apostle Paul explains this: «But the gift was not like the fault; for if for the lack of the one many died, much more the grace of God, and the gift that is in the grace of the one man Jesus Christ has exceeded for the many" (Romans 5:15). And he mentions it again in Rom 5:16b saying: "but the gift of grace came for many sins, it brought justification" However, the Gift is a gift from God to the church for the world. The gift of each religious family is a special way in which its members are called to follow Christ in that way of life. Carmelites have been gifted with the gift - the grace - the gift of living a life of reflection/contemplation, a life of brotherhood and a life of service.

Contemplative life

Meditation and prayer are the heart of life in Carmel. The Carmelite family believes that the heart of our way of life - This is for all Carmelites, Priests, Friars, Sisters of the inner life or of the apostolic life Third Monastery, lay people, or hermits - our heart of life is reflection. St. John of the Cross once explained that meditation is God's grace flowing in man. It is to have friendship with God as Father Joseph Chalmers, O.Carm once said . From the first days of its existence, the Carmelite community followed an ascetic way of life.

This system is in its structure and in its value or in its values. This is clearly seen in its Rule which describes the Carmelite community as a community that has focused directly on prayer and being attentive to the Word, celebrating and praising the Lord with all efforts. The word reflects or reflect can be explained eloquently as looking and seeing with spiritual eyes the divine reality, as the psalmist says: «But I will look at your face in righteousness, I will wake up and be satisfied with your image» (Ps 17:15). It is the state of recognizing God's presence in life. So, to live a life of reflection is to live in the presence of God and to be with him face to face. The basis of reflection is the Word of God which purifies the one who reads it and lives it because it is the Truth: «Sanctify them with the truth; your word is the truth" (John 17:17). But the Word in particular is Christ himself as we read that: "In the beginning there was a Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1), "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us; and we saw his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father; he is full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). Meditating on the Living Word is meditating on the glory of Jesus Christ who sanctifies us so that our lives can be like his.

So, the life of reflection in Carmel is the gift given to a person by the Holy Spirit to seek to live a life of union with God. Although all three gifts cannot be separated, still somehow the emphasis is placed on the gift of the life of reflection because it is the essence of the other two gifts. From the very beginning of Carmel’s, our ancestors lived this gift on Mount Carmel by directing their whole lives to reading and meditating on the Word of God and living it. Such an experience is shown by Samuel. The author of the first book of Samuel says that, since Samuel learned the Word of the Lord, he made it a very important part of his life: "Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and he did not let any of his words fall to the ground" (1Sam 3:19). That is why even the Psalmist says: "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path" (Ps 119:105).

Since this gift requires inner silence, and inner silence is often supported by outer silence, then the Carmelite communities are required to live in a quieter and more prayerful environment. When the word of God turns into a prayer, then the whole community prays the Lord's praises with one voice to praise and glorify him. A person cannot praise and glorify God if he has not yet been touched by the power of his Word. Then you will realize that the gift of reflection leads a person to enter into the mystery of God's presence and thus realize his greatness and the wonders he does in people's lives.

The word of God has changed many people. You will find then that Carmelite communities are made up of people who want to free themselves so that they can become the home of the Holy Spirit who transforms them with his talents which are; purity of heart, holy thoughts, justice, love, faith, and firm hope in salvation. A life of reflection enables the Carmelite to do his work in a state of inner peace and tranquillity as the Apostle Paul says: «So we command them, and warn them in the Lord Jesus Christ, to work quietly and eat their own food» (2The 3:12). Meditation begins when we trust in God who comes to us in whatever way he chooses himself. In that way, the life of reflection is an inner tendency or habit of opening the whole heart to God. But it is the Word of God that gives man the light that opens his heart: «For the Word of God is alive, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword; again, it burns until it splits the soul and spirit, and the organs and fat contained in it; and it is easy to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12). This makes us aware of his presence anywhere in our lives.

Therefore, the gift of a life of reflection is a spiritual and innermost journey of the soul of every Carmelite who connects with God spiritually. God is the one who touches every Carmelite and changes him towards a life of loving unity with him. He lifts up everyone who is ready to release himself so that he can freely taste the full joy of being loved by God and live in his loving presence. In that way, meditation is an experience of the power of God's Love that completely changes a person and makes him who is weak in thinking holy things and loving, be able to do so in a more divine way. For the reality of our humanity, each one needs to be touched by God. Reflection or reflection has a great value in the life of every Christian. That is why for the Carmelites, meditation is not only a source of spiritual life, but also what determines and supports the quality of fraternal and service life for God's people. In other words, the gift of reflection is what unites the other two gifts.

Carmelites, wherever they are, when they manage to faithfully live the fruits of meditation, in addition to being in the middle of life with all kinds of challenges, then that is the testimony of the mystery of God's living presence among his people. A Christian should not create any excuse for not having time to sit and talk with God. That is why the task of seeking the face of God and receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit makes the Carmelite communities more careful in recognizing the signs of the times and at the same time more careful in recognizing the seeds of the Word of God. That's when you come to realize that the life of meditation or reflection considers and evaluates various historical events that happen in the Church, in the world and very much in the communities of ordinary people, with the aim of providing the help you need according to the will of God.

In that way, the Carmelites, by following Jesus Christ, show solidarity by encouraging events that bring hope and love in society. By reflecting on all that is happening in this world, and being guided by the Word of God, the Carmelites strive to make decisions that contribute to changing the lives of many people so that their lives and actions are in line with the will of God the Father. Let me reiterate that, in order for a life of contemplation to be fruitful, you need true inner silence that gives God the opportunity to speak. Due to the need for internal silence, even the external environment must be silent as well. External silence facilitates the exercise of sinking deep into the soul and connecting with God.
